Rajiv Gandhi assassination: Congress protests against Perarivalan’s release, BJP says ‘double standards’ - AG Perarivalan, who was convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, was released by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

While Stalin has lauded the Supreme Court's order, Congress has blamed the BJP government for being "complicit in the release of terrorists."

Perarivalan was 19 years old when he was arrested in 1991. The Supreme Court on Wednesday invoked extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the constitution.

Many on Twitter directed their congratulations to Arputhammal, noting her extraordinary struggle of three decades.

Three days ahead of Rajiv Gandhi's 31st death anniversary, the Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the release of AG Perarivalan, who was in jail for over 30 years after being convicted in the assassination of the former PM.
