Jacob MacDonald and Anthony Duclair each scored twice, and Kaapo Kahkonen stopped 44 shots as the San Jose Sharks beat the New Jersey Devils 6-3 on Friday night for their first road win this season. Mikael Granlund had a goal and two assists and William Eklund also scored for San Jose, which improved to 6-16-2 overall. The league-worst Sharks came in 0-10-0 away from home with just six goals in those games.

New Jersey defenseman Dougie Hamilton and forward Tomas Nosek are out indefinitely after both had surgeries this week. Hamilton had an operation Friday to repair his torn left pectoral muscle hurt Tuesday night against the New York Islanders. Nosek had surgery this past Wednesday to fix his right foot, which he hurt against Arizona on Oct. 13, forcing him to miss 10 games earlier this season.

Columbus won for the second-straight time after a nine-game losing streak while New Jersey lost its third in a row and for the sixth time in seven games.

At stake is control of the 80-member Assembly and 40-seat Senate, with Democrats currently dominating both chambers, as well as holding the governorship. It added fresh uncertainty to an industry seen by supporters as a way to help end the burning of planet-warming fossil fuels, but derided by opponents as inherently unworkable without massive financial subsidies.

Nick Bjugstad and Nick Schmaltz scored in the shootout, and the Arizona Coyotes recovered after giving up a two-goal lead and rallied to beat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 on Friday night. Schmaltz also had a goal and an assist in regulation, and Matt Dumba and Sean Durzi also scored for the Coyotes in their regular season opener. Rookie forward Logan Cooley had two assists in his NHL debut and Karel Vejmelka made 33 saves.

Hamilton beat Ville Husso with a blast from the point at 15:37, helping the Devils pick up where they left off last season when they finished with 112 points. Jack Hughes scored twice in the second period for New Jersey, and Jonas Siegenthaler had three assists.
