Police Minister Bheki Cele says the DNA backlog is expected to be erased by January next year.

The Authority of the National Forensic Oversight and Ethics Board (DNA Boarrd) was grilled by members of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee (PPC) on police to answer questions about its contradictory statistics.

Amnesty International South Africa has called on Police Minister Bheki Cele to give a clear outline of the DNA backlog of gender-based violence and femicide-related cases.

Gauteng Police commissioner Elias Mawela says the much publicised DNA processing backlog at the country’s forensic science laboratories remains a challenge to the fight against gender-based violence, but he adds other resources are being channeled to ensure police can respond to cases.

A rape suspect who was freed because of delays in DNA analysis at the police forensic laboratories raped and murdered an 11-year-old child nine months later.

Cele said that the police were concerned about the negative impact the backlog was having on court cases that involved women and children.

Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz said dealing with the matter would have a significant impact on crime-fighting, especially when dealing with gender-based violence and femicide.
