At least for one more game, Don Treadwell will lead the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff football team onto the field.

If there is anything the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff football seniors can do for one final act on their home field today, it might help break a seven-game losing streak, matching last year’s lengthy slide.

PINE BLUFF -- The Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions will host the Prairie View A&M Panthers in their final home game of the 2022 season at Simmons Bank Field today.

Awkwardness seemed likely. Still, none was evident as Arkansas-Pine Bluff Athletic Director Chris Robinson and interim-head football Coach Don Treadwell discussed the state of football and other athletic programs on the UAPB campus.

Homecoming for the Grambling State Tigers is fun for everyone except the visiting football team, which means another tough task faces the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

In his first comments since letting Doc Gamble go as head football coach, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff athletic director Chris Robinson said the firing on Oct. 20 was not a decision made overnight.

The switch to Don Treadwell wasn’t a magic-wand act to suddenly change Golden Lion football fortunes. Although the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff fought Florida A&M University to a scoreless first quarter, the Rattlers rattled off 24 unanswered points on their way to a 27-6 win before a homecoming crowd Saturday in Tallahassee.

Don Treadwell has had more than a week to consider this moment in the history of University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff football. He’s taken over the Golden Lions for their last four games of the season, in hopes of reversing a five-game losing skid and avoiding a second straight losing record, almost two years after competing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game.

Doc Gamble will be paid 50% of the remaining salary he would have earned had he remained head football coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff through March 2023, according to his contract. A copy of Gambles contract was released to The Commercial by request under the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act.
