A new volunteer program will soon begin monitoring Smith Mountain Lake in an effort to better understand algae growth around the shoreline as well as more quickly identify any harmful algal blooms.

The Smith Mountain Lake Association recently announced a new program tasking local residents with keeping a watchful eye on the lake to find and identify any harmful algal blooms before they can become a major problem.
