by the united states and by u.s. allies, as well, in the european union, for instance. and while that s had an impact on the russian economy, it s led to a downturn in economic growth in this country, what it hasn t done is done anything to limit or change russia s policy and its territorial ambitions. and so it seems that russia has emerged as very resilient to any kind of action that the west has taken so far. now, that doesn t mean there won t be more strong action and that more strong action won t have an impact, but it will certainly make, i think, the western allies think twice before they engage in another round of imposing sanctions against moscow. for their part, russia is just saying, look, this is ukraine, this is a provocation that they orchestrated, basically in order to make us look bad. matthew chance, thank you for that, out of russia. coming up next, an associate
this was an effort, if we take it at face value, to take out a senior tier of leadership in the democratic party. we don t know who the perpetrator was at this point. that s the fbi s job. we don t know if this is an ongoing crime, if there are more bombs coming. so we ll learn a little bit more in the days ahead, but i had someone say to me this morning, a friend who called and said i need some reassurance. i feel like it s 9/11 happening all over again. this is what bombers try to do. they want to instill fear in people. they are cowards. they act from afar. today it s a good opportunity for the country to reassess where we are and recommit to working together and having a few more country over party moments. unfortunately, that doesn t seem to be where the president wants to lead us. nick, your thoughts. it s interesting. i was thinking about a phrase from pat buchanan back from his days with richard nixon.
that we almost saw a couple of presidents, a vice president, assassinated. imagine if the security screenings did not work and yesterday was a day of bloodshed as opposed to a day where these terror attacks and assassinations failed. this would have been amongst the most significant days in the history of the united states. and but for proper security screenings and the competence of law enforcement, there was no disaster. but that doesn t mean there won t be next time. and the person who is most singularly responsible for edging this country into a cold civil war is donald j. trump. it s a shameful legacy that he ll carry with him because of that for the rest of his days. jackie, let me bring you into this conversation. alex burns of the new york times writes some of trump s worst political crises as president have come when the country has been looking for
well, they re right about that. but that doesn t mean there won t be conversations or they won t conduct themselves. because neither one of these guys plays by the sort of rules of civilized society that we re used to seeing. after all, donald trump has spent his entire life beating off law enforcement investigations, running out the clock, ratting out other people to protect himself. and michael cohen has been involved in really trying to engage himself in american foreign policy with this violent convicted felon felix sater over the crimea. i mean, these are people who have no sense of boundary, rules, or propriety. and emily, quickly before we go, michael cohen has always prided himself on his thug-like behavior with people who he thinks are weaker than he is. and we have all read the threats to the daily beast reporter where he promised to absolutely destroy this person s life. the most grotesque, ridiculous,
