Some space debris is too small to be cleaned up practically. Instead, we need to know where it is so we can avoid it.

The growing space debris problem may result in the “Kessler Effect” - when smaller bits of junk may collide to make the orbit unusable.

Russia blew up a big, derelict satellite in an objectively terrible area of space. The explosion of the around 4,850-pound satellite (Cosmos 1408) created a cloud of fragments that triggered an emergency response on the relatively nearby International Space Station. A simulation of the orbital debris shows the ring of problematic space junk now orbiting Earth.
