MURPHY'S LAW

By Patrick Murphy When I first started seriously watching sports on television, the people who played the games were men, larger than life, and I was just and awe-struck kid. They seemed like giants; fit, trim and so cool in their uniforms. They would gracefully glide through a perfectly manicured outfield to make a sliding catch or reach out for a football that landed gently in their hands. Others raced up and down a basketball court, soaring through the air before dunking the ball. It all see...

#44 | WSAU News/Talk 550 AM · 99.9 FM | Wausau, Stevens Point

Jan 23, 2021 7:02 AM There have been dozens of MLB players that have worn the number 44. Great players…Hall of Famers…not so great players…and absolute stiffs. But for me, and those of my generation the #44 will always be associated first with Henry Aaron. Aaron died this week and another piece of my childhood died with him. One of my first vivid memories is of being in the backyard of my house on Turner St and trying to hit whiffle balls over the roof…like Aaron and Matthews...

News of the Week: Snow Wishes, Mickey Mantle, and the Great Gatsby Is Now a Vampire

“ Just to live in New England in winter is a full-time job; you don’t have to ‘do’ anything. The idle pursuit of making-a-living is pushed to one side, where it belongs, in favor of living itself, a task of such immediacy, variety, beauty, and excitement that one is powerless to resist its wild embrace.” —E.B. White, A Report in January, 1958 Sadly, the weather that Mr. White described in his essay hasn’t materialized around these parts this winter. We had a couple batches of sno...

Remembering Durable Don Sutton (1945-2020), the Ultimate Compiler

January 22, 2021 Don Sutton did not have the flash of Sandy Koufax, or the intimidating presence of Don Drysdale. He lacked the overpowering fastball of Nolan Ryan, and didn’t fill his mantel with Cy Young awards the way that Tom Seaver or Steve Carlton did. He never won a World Series or threw a no-hitter. Yet Sutton earned a spot in the Hall of Fame alongside those more celebrated hurlers just the same. He was one of the most durable pitchers in baseball history, as dependable as a Swiss wa...

Hank Aaron, baseball's one-time home run king, dies at...

ATLANTA (AP) — His name is all over the baseball record book and, indeed, Hank Aaron could do it all. Sure, hes remembered mostly for dethroning the Babe to become baseballs home run king on the way to 755, but dont forget about the .300 average, or the graceful way he fielded his position, or the deceiving speed he showed on the basepaths. Yet, when talking about the true measure of the man, there was far more to “Hammerin’ Hank” than his brilliance between the lines. Exuding grace an...

Corrections: Jan. 22, 2021 Jan. 21, 2021 NATIONAL An article on Thursday about President Biden’s actions on environmental and climate policy misstated a generally accepted time frame for achieving emissions reductions.
