Mr. Speaker, as i look to the president to lead this country, i want to look at a man who, of his past and who he is, a very dynamic person. Came from very tough circumstances to become president of the United States. I wish he would say, you know what . My job is to lead this conversation about jobs and the economy. My job is to lead this conversation, look, we tried stimulus spending. I really thought it would work, but it didnt. Some republicans, why dont you come to the white house . Why dont you have a conversation with me . I havent been invited for years. Maybe we arent going to find any agreement, but at least we can respect each others opinions and say what do we need to do to get our economy back on track. Why is it 7 of our neighbors dont have jobs, many of them are underemployed in jobs they dont want. Why is that . What can we do to come together . Extra money. No one got rich of of it. When we were working extra, we worked those extra hours during the summer. We were compensated for it. And really proud of that. And also thinking back to my childhood, i often think about the people that would come over to our house and play cards and dominoes on saturday night and when the man would talk about uplifting themselves and get that better job and better salary, the companies they talked about and how you get on that. That was the saying. You have a friend that can get me on. And when people were talking about getting on about splaste, hat was a place that had a union and one of our forces that were fighting for families for Health Insurance and dental insurance and just basic things like that that so many people take for granted and helped shape the person imtoday. Labor unions have fought to raise the standard of living for the middle class, ensure safe working conditions and increase benefits for both workers and their families. Un
And what we do these things like furloughs, we do them across the board. And you can bet that the federal debt the best federal employees are saying ive got to get out of here. What youre left with are mediocre and poor performers. The furloughs are so poorly targeted that you are basically sending your message to your best workers that if you can find a job with a contractor, if you can find a job with a private firm, now is the time to go. It is a silly way to do it. I cannot imagine what happened in these agencies that they did not prepare for the sequestered. Maybe they were listening to president obama khan said, well, this is not going to happen president obama, who said, well, this is not afford to happen. But ive seen agencies do pretty well in this process by not furloughing employees. Were going to get less service.
