After the Northport City Council denied the mayors request to rename a street, third-term Mayor Bobby Herndon announced he would resign Dec. 31.

Aaron was the first woman elected mayor in Northport. She also served on two terms on the Northport City Council and taught school for three decades.

Leaders in Tuscaloosa and Northport praised Donna Aarons strength and compassion. Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox called her Northports "Iron Lady."

In addition to setting its 2022 fundraising goal, the United Way of West Alabama also added four nonprofits to its lineup of partner agencies.

Aaron was the first and only woman to hold the mayor's seat for the city of Northport, Alabama.

Northport Mayor Bobby Herndon went home on Friday after spending a few days in the hospital following a COVID-19 diagnosis.  The 67-year-old mayor was admitted to the hospital on Sunday for blood-clot-related issues. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 earlier that day.  Herndon provided updates of his condition and treatments on his Facebook page during the week.
