Bisons have been absent in the UK wild for thousands of years, but these "gentle giants" have returned, thanks to a special project called the Wilder Blean project.

Three European bison will be released into the West Blean and Thornden Woods nature reserve in Kent on Monday to improve biodiversity

The gentle giants released in Kent should transform a commercial pine forest into a vibrant natural woodland

It is hoped the beefy bovines will bring a range of benefits to the environment

The bison have been extinct in the UK for 6,000 years, but are this morning being released into a fenced enclosure to manage West Blean and Thornden Woods near Canterbury, Kent.

A Scottish matriarch and two Irish youngsters have been released, with a German bull set to complete the herd.

The move forms part of a £1.12 million project to manage woods near Canterbury.

European bison are the closest living relative to ancient steppe bison that would have once roamed Britain.
