Opposition leader under siege as corruption probe expands

When prosecutors were investigating key officials at Seongnam Development Corp. last year for alleged corrupt business deals with property developers in the past, Lee Jae-myung, the citys former mayor, denied close ties with any of them. Speaking to reporters on Oct. 3, 2021, Rep. Lee, now the chief of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), had said that only a few people, such as Kim Yong and Jeong Jin-sang, deserved to be called his “close aides.”

Ex-Doosan CEO indicted over donation connected to Lee Jae-myung

Prosecutors on Friday indicted a former CEO of Doosan Engineering Construction and an official of Seongnam City in connection with alleged corruption involving opposition leader Lee Jae-myung. The case centers on allegations that the city government of Seongnam, just south of Seoul, had attracted about 16 billion won ($11.2 million) in donations from six corporations, including Doosan, to its pro-football club in return for business favors in the mid-2010s.

Opposition leader targeted

Prosecutors raided 10 corporate offices, including internet portal Naver, Monday, over allegations that Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) who served as mayor of Seongnam from 2010 to 2018, received donations from companies via Seongnam FC, the citys football club. The Seongnam branch of the Suwon District Prosecutors Office sent prosecutors and investigators to the offices to search and seize documents related to the case.
