Literary editor Robert Gottileb, who worked on classics such as Toni Morrisons "Beloved" and Robert Caros "The Power Broker," has died at age 92.

Gottlieb, whose work helped shape the modern publishing canon, edited fiction by future Nobel laureates, spy novels by John le Carré, essays by Nora Ephron and Caro's nonfiction epics.

Robert Gottlieb, a literary editor that counted Robert Caro, Toni Morrison and John le Carré among his clients, has died. He was 92.

Gottlieb died Wednesday of natural causes at a New York hospital.

During a seven-decade career as the top editor at Simon & Schuster, Alfred A. Knopf, and the New Yorker, Robert A. Gottlieb published Toni Morrison, Joseph Heller, and Robert Caro, among other authors who could fill an anthology of contemporary literary heavyweights.

He died of natural causes on Wednesday at a New York hospital, Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group said.
