It worked: NASA confirmed DART crashed into the Dimorphos asteroid, altering the orbit by 32 minutes.

It took days of telescope observations to determine how much the impact altered the asteroid's path around its companion, a bigger space rock.

"It was a bullseye," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said.

Space agency attempted first test of its kind two weeks ago to see if in the future a killer rock could be nudged out of Earth’s way

Findings of telescope observations showed the DART spacecraft changed the direction of an asteroid, NASA said, in what it described as a watershed moment for planetary defence.

Weeks after NASA's DART spacecraft purposely collided with an asteroid, the agency confirmed the impact changed its orbit greater than initially expected.

The asteroid’s surface is believed to be extremely rough and full of boulders. It does not have a known atmosphere.
