Now experts have to measure and watch to see if the nudge alters the orbit of the asteroid enough to register as a success.

The moment a NASA spacecraft crashed into an asteroid at hypersonic speed was captured by observatories back on Earth.

The tiny Light Italian Cubesat for Imaging of Asteroids (LICIACube) spacecraft captured the moment of NASAs DART spacecraft colliding with an asteroid in all its messy glory.

NASA successfully crashed a spacecraft into an asteroid on Monday night. These are the final images it captured as it hurtled toward the rocky surface.

While the asteroid, Dimorphos, was not at risk of impacting Earth, this demonstration could determine how to deflect space rocks that could pose a threat to Earth in the future.

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) successfully showed that it is possible to crash a spacecraft into a small asteroid. Whether the approach could save Earth from a future threat remains to be seen.

The successful space mission could help save humanity from future asteroid strikes

The South African Astronomical Observatory, in Sutherland, in the Western Cape, took images of how NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft crashed into the Dimorphos asteroid on Monday.

The DART mission, or the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, launched 10 months ago.
