Tonight, a robotic NASA spacecraft is programmed to ram itself into a distant asteroid at 14,000 mph in deep space to demonstrate the agencys future ability to defend Earth from hazardous space rocks.

Ten months after launch, NASAs asteroid-deflecting DART spacecraft neared a planned impact with its target on Monday in a test of the worlds first planetary defence system, designed to prevent a doomsday collision with Earth.

This marks the world's first attempt to change the motion of an asteroid, or any celestial body.

The DART mission is humanity's first-ever attempt to change the motion of an asteroid in space by intentionally crashing a spacecraft into it.
