An explosion. the heat would volatize, vaporize, oblate, burn off some of the asteroid, and that momentum of the pushed-off stuff would push the asteroid. that may work. but even simpler and more straightforward is just hitting the asteroid with something very small but going very, very fast. d.a.r.t., double asteroid redirection test, is going about four miles a second, four miles a second. >> wow. >> so it has a lot of momentum. so when we hit this smaller asteroid, we are very hopeful that it...

Spacecraft on a collision course with an asteroid has a dress rehearsal for armageddon. phil keating explains from miami. >> and with this flawless launch from californias air force base, nasas first of its kind asteroid smasher is on its way here it ultimately this mission to save our planet and all of humanity from annihilation. it is called the dork and stanford double asteroid and part of the planet tory defense testing one method of deflection technology. the first test of planetary defense...

If you switch to cabenuva, attend all treatment appointments. with once-a-month cabenuva, im good to go. ask your doctor about once-monthly cabenuva. about once a year we get a visit from a car size asteroid. not impressive enough for a movie plot but it makes it cool fireball as it enters the earths atmosphere, burdens up before it reaches the surface of the earth. about every few thousand years. we get hit by an asteroid the sides of a football field, and they can cause major damage. so a grou...

One. so this did the most binary asteroid, did almost in die morph us if you are in to have been aiming. isnt asteroid where you have a wide center, like this double strawberry. and then you have another asteroid going around it like the blueberry. so if you can hit the blueberry with a spacecraft, like the strawberry leaves, then you can slow the smaller asteroid down. ever so slightly. and then one an object is closer to the larger object it will go run faster. that is why, for example mercury...

That momentum of the pushed off stuff. that me work. but even simpler, and more straightforward, is just hitting the asteroid with something very small but going very very fast. dart, double asteroid redirection test, is going about four miles a second. for miles a second. >> wow. >> so it has a lot of momentum. we hit this asteroid, we are very hopeful that it will get it a notch. the composition of the asteroid is not exactly known. so there are so called escape yes, we are confident that when...

And so well be able to detect this tiny change in the period of the smaller asteroid. and this will prove or disprove the hypothesis that this so-called kinetic impact, energy impact, could deflect an asteroid in the future and, dare i say it, save the world. >> well, you and i are of an era where we had some great science fiction shows and books. and in those they would have just blasted any asteroid that threatened earth to smithereens. we apparently dont have that technology? >> no. plus ther...

NASA’s first planetary defense mission is in space.

Up because we have no end of weaponry to do this. but thats not the wisest path. all engineering calculations tell us. because if you blow something up, while were good at blowing it up, were not as good as knowing where the pieces will end up. so its safer and its more controlled to deflect an asteroid from harms way. and what we found is a double asteroid, so the d.a. in the d.a.r.t. stands for double asteroid redirect test. and we know the orbit of the moon. thats about the size of a football...

Again. >> reporter: so president biden is throwing major roadblocks in the former presidents way in terms of sealing the documents from the committee, but obviously its not the last step and trump will fight this in courts. >> thank you. its always a lot. we appreciate it. coming up, steve bannon may think he has a way out of his deposition, but could he comply? well break down the consequences for trump allies who dont cooperate. well also ask if the abortion rights could make its way to th...

Asteroid redirection test or dart for short is the first of its kind test a planetary defense, the mission is scheduled to launch in november, putting the spacecraft on a collision course with an asteroid in september or october of next year. >> it will come speeding in 15,000 miles per hour to hit this smaller asteroid. >> this is just a test. the asteroid in question is not on a collision course with earth. just close enough that when the spacecraft actually hits it a small change in its orbit...
