Nearly two years after protests erupted in the streets of Austin in May 2020 following the death of George Floyd, 40 pages of indictments were released late Tuesday — charging 19 Austin Police Department officers each with two counts of aggravated assault.

Prosecutors in Texas capital city released documents describing charges against police officers. Critics say the move is political.

Nineteen Austin police officers have been indicted for their actions during the 2020 George Floyd protests and riots, according to documents publicly released Tuesday.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statement Wednesday in defense of the 19 Austin Police Department officers who were indicted on felony charges by progressive Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza.

While some of these protesters could have a basis for a personal injury case, the officers did not commit any crimes, their attorneys said Monday.
