Around 1,160 people were detected in the 21-mile wide Dover Straits yesterday in 25 boats as they attempted to make the treacherous crossing to the UK, according to the Ministry of Defence.

More than 25,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel to the UK so far this year, Government figures show.

A record number of migrants have crossed the English Channel in small boats this month, as the total for this year passes 23,000.

The figure would surpass the current daily record total for the year of 696 set on August 1, while it would come within touching distance of the highest ever figure of 1,185 - set in November last year.

After several days with no crossings, a total of 1,295 people were detected crossing the English Channel in small boats on Monday. The figure surpasses the old daily record total of 1,185.

Official figures showed that 1,295 migrants reached Britain on Monday, smashing the previous daily record by more than 100. About 60 per cent of the total, at least 700, were from Albania.

The the National Strategy for Maritime Security said up to 250,000 migrants will make come to the UK through the Channel by 2027 amid more crossing this morning into Dover.

Data obtained through UK Freedom of Information (FOI) requests reveals that 52 migrants in total managed to claim that they were children in initial checks, before being found to be 30 or older.
