The Polk County Health Department also began vaccinating 12- through 15-year-olds on Thursday. The health department is offering vaccinations only to people with appointments, which can be made at immunizepolk.com or by calling 515-323-5221. But those appointments are much easier to obtain than they were a few weeks ago, when demand for the vaccine outstripped supply.

Iowa pharmacies and clinics began vaccinating kids as young as 12 against COVID-19 on Thursday, the day after federal officials gave the green light.
The new authorization to vaccinate adolescents only applies to the Pfizer version of the vaccine. Iowa health officials said they ample supplies of Pfizer shots on hand, and they hope families will bring their kids in to be vaccinated.
Hy-Vee pharmacies have been one of the main providers of COVID vaccinations in Iowa. The grocery chain receives its vaccine directly from the federal government, and it started offering the shots to adults without appointment two weeks ago.
