Bizimana Charles' journey began in 1972 when, at the age of 4, he fled from Burundi to Congo, leaving behind war in his home country.
In 1996, Charles traveled from Congo to Tanzania, where he spent 13 years living in a refugee camp. On Aug. 18, 2009, he came to the United States, stopping along the way in Kenya, England, New York and Chicago before finally arriving in Des Moines.
