In a circular dated July 7, the Madras HC registry directed that only the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Thiruvalluvar should be displayed inside the court premises.
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday conveyed to the Madras High Court Chief Justice "its position that portraits of Dr. BR Ambedkar should not be removed from court premises."
In a circular issued to all the courts in the state, the Madras High Court said that only the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Thiruvalluvar should be displayed inside the court premises.
The Court, therefore, turned down the requests made by various advocates' associations to have the portrait of Dr. BR Ambedkar inside courts in the State.
