Water quality advocates see protection in the United States Environmental Protection Agencys hazardous substance designation for two of the most common PFAS, PFOA and PFOS. PFAS have an especially toxic legacy in West Virginia stemming from the Washington Works facility originally operated by DuPont near Parkersburg.

Efforts are underway in Stuart to hold the state of Florida accountable for falling short on their clean water responsibilities.

The West Virginia Rivers Coalition has threatened to sue Chemours over what the group says are lingering violations of the Clean Water Act tied to PFAS at the companys Washington Works plant near Parkersburg. Chemours says the United States Environmental Protection Agency has yet to approve a PFAS remediation plan the agency required the company to submit in a consent order in April 2023.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency hasnt made final decisions on key documents in its review that could address longstanding water quality concerns. Those include West Virginias list of impaired waters and a Chemours plan to address PFAS discharges at its Washington Works facility in Wood County.

Lake Okeechobee discharges have started, and people who live in communities near the impacted waterways are not so happy.Residents have been vocal for years to

"We’re really concerned that this could be setting us up for another lost summer on the Treasure Coast," Eve Samples, executive director of Friends of the Everglades, told WPBF 25 News.

Nichole Westfall, a mural artist, provided a mural that attendees helped paint that read “In Each Drop a Dream: All Our Mountain Streams Run Clean” — an ideal well over 300 people rallied behind at the event led by the West Virginia Rivers Coalition to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the chemical leak.

The West Virginia Rivers Coalition and other advocacy groups are presenting a free event at the Culture Center to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 2014 Elk River chemical spill that contaminated the drinking water supply of 300,000 residents.
