Warm tributes paid to former Crossmaglen parish priest following death from Covid Fr Joe McKeever 25 January, 2021 01:00 A FORMER Crossmaglen parish priest who died after contracting coronavirus has been remembered for his kindness, humour and passionate support for Cross Rangers. Fr Joe McKeever, who was originally from Portadown, died at Craigavon Area Hospital on Saturday morning. A late vocation, he did not enter the priesthood until his 40s following a teaching career which included Drumcree High School. Renowned for his character and wit, he was well known beyond Co Armagh. Fr Paddy McCafferty, parish priest at Corpus Christi in Ballymurphy, lived next door to him for a period when studying at Maynooth and remembered him as absolutely hilarious .

Tributes to Fr Joe McKeever, former Crossmaglen priest who has died with Covid

Portadown native Fr Joe McKeever died at Craigavon Area Hospital on Saturday morning. The retired priest has been described as a “great character” who was well-known right across Co Armagh and beyond. Fr McKeever taught at Drumcree High School for a number of years before he entered the priesthood, when aged in his 40s. Among those paying tribute following his passing was Fr Paddy McCafferty, parish priest at Corpus Christi in Ballymurphy. The west Belfast priest said: “Joe, originally from Portadown, was a late vocation having taught in Drumcree High School for some time. He was in his early 40s when he came to Maynooth to study for the priesthood. He was my next door neighbour for a while back then.”
