Back in the 1960s and 70s the Quay area of Dundalk could boast 16 active pubs which were kept busy by a thriving community. Today that number has been whittled to a mere four, but one that has stood the test of time and is hugely popular with locals and many others is Kehoe s bar on the corner of Quay Street and St. Joseph s Park (The Sand Hole) that remains in favour and is a bustling hive of activity.
The bar itself can be traced back to the early 1930s when it started life as a grocery shop with a small snug attached that helped to service the area. The premises was originally owned by the O Callaghan family who had three sons. One became a priest, one an engineer and son Dick eventually took over the running of the bar from his parents in the mid 1960s after they had built up a thriving business in a very competitive area.
