On the farthest east on the island of Ireland you will find County Down in Northern Ireland.
It may not be the most famous of Northern Ireland’s six counties, but oh what a mistake it would be to miss out on Down’s natural wonders and historic sites on any visit to the Emerald Isle.

When we were kids it was always UK holidays, usually under canvas, and always recalled with affection. I have no problem giving up foreign travel for a while, although I do miss the sheer scale and biodiversity of distant wildernesses and worry about the communities who invested hope, and effort, in tourism as a way of holding off the oilmen, gold prospectors and road diggers. Iâm praying they hang on. We will return!
