A vote on a proposal to rename a stretch of Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive was delayed in City Council Wednesday.

According to the language of the initial ordinance, proposed in 2019, Lake Shore Drive would be renamed "Jean Baptiste Point du Sable Drive" from Hollywood Boulevard, located in the city’s Edgewater neighborhood on the North Side, to the South 71st Street merge on the South Side. Aldermen used a parliamentary maneuver to temporarily block a vote on a plan to rename Lake Shore Drive for the Black explorer credited with founding Chicago.

Ald. David Moore said the Lightfoot administration offered substitutes, such as renaming the Dan Ryan Expressway. That had "racial overtones," he said. "Keep it on the South Side. South of like 35th Street. Let’s be honest. Keep it in the Black community," Moore told the Sun-Times.
