Prison, particularly for Black Americans, gets reduced to simple caricatures of violence and suffering. Inside the confines of a jail cell, through a book, I discovered salvation.

Freedom Reads, Betts’ non profit group, will officially donate 2,500 books in five custom-made lending libraries to the Robert N. Davoren Center, the jail for young men on Rikers Island, a place often buffeted by violence, poor conditions and crumbling architecture.
