today, we re announcing the indictme of four individuals responsible for the 2014 hack into the network of e-mail provider yahoo. the theft of information about at least 500 million yahoo accounts and the use of that information to obtain the contents of accounts at yahoo and other e-mail providers. there there was a massive hack of e-mail accounts of yahoo. joining me is chief international security and diplomacy analyst and former nato supreme allied commander. good to see you. what s the broad implication of these charges? there is no other way to look at it considering there are two russian government officials

of connections immediately going back to what that person was doing last month six months ago. in 2015 you don t put people on the street. you get all that data from phone companies, e-mail providers and say, hey, within 24 hours i have a pretty good understanding of what the spider web is around that spider. if you tell me tomorrow that we don t have that data going back a year going back six months going back a month, you tell me how when somebody walks in the room and says we have a new subject in new york city how are you going to build a spider web of understanding around that person in 24 hours? it s not going to happen. so phil now that the fbi has admitted that they actually don t have the manpower to surveil everybody, how many people do you think we re talking about that requires surveillance here in the u.s. and our local pds up to it? there are very few police departments that can hands l this threat. not because they don t have tremendous capability but i think people
they said they will review them for release as soon as possible. as she faces a subpoena, the question remains did she do anything illegal? abc s jonathan karl has more. reporter: we are learning not only did mrs. clinton in a possible violation of federal regulations completely bypass the state department s e-mail system, it turns out she also bypassed big e-mail providers like gmail and yahoo. instead running her e-mails through a private server, apparently set up at her home in chappaqua, new york. a fact first reported by the associated press. even odder, her email server is registered under the name eric hoteham. it is not clear who that is and the clinton team is not saying. reporter: mrs. clinton headlined a fund-raiser for a group emily s list saying nothing about the e-mail controversy but reminding supporters of the history she hopes to make. don t you someday want to see a woman president of the united states of america? reporter: clinton s aides say she did absolu
action, google attorneys cited a supreme court decision stating that users should have no legitimate expectation of privacy, so in terms of mining personal data these services are big honey pots. so the first thing we need to do is decentralize again. reporter: mccarthy argues we should all seek out more obscure e-mail providers, which have fewer users and are less attracted to big marketers. or better yet, use an e-mail program that lives in your computer, bypassing the middle man. and he says we should all start looking at encryption software that will garble every message so it can only be read by the person to whom it is sent. it is all very technical and a lot of big e-mail providers insist they do protect their user s privacy. but mccarthy is part of a group developing something called mail pile, which they hope may offer a consumer-friendly alternative with lots of protection soon. we re fairly certain over the next month or so, technical
