The RMC has designated 131 routes for around 4,500 registered electric rickshaws in a bid to modernise the city’s transportation infrastructure. The route plan would be published by January 10. RMC administrator Ameet Kumar said, “The strategic integration of e-rickshaws into the city’s transportation infrastructure and their route mapping have been done to reduce traffic snarls, promote sustainable commuting, and contribute to a healthier environment.”

Abhimanyu Bhardwaj from Kashipur, who brought the matter to the court’s attention, highlighted in a public interest litigation (PIL) that e-rickshaws in the city lack fixed routes, leading to their presence on National Highways and posing a risk of fatal accidents. The court directed Bhardwaj to include the transport commissioner as a party in the case.

During the meeting, Pandey also ordered installation of GPS devices in every commercial vehicle, including e-rickshaws, city buses, taxis and three-wheelers. For this, vehicle owners have been given a time limit till 30th April.
