Advocates pushing for sentencing reform gathered outside the capital Wednesday to call on lawmakers to pass three bills introduced in last years legislative session--the Eliminate Mandatory Minimums

Advocates, lawmakers and impacted families plan on holding seven rallies across the state on Wednesday in support of a package of bills that would eliminate mandatory minimum sentencing, allow incarcerated people to petition for resentencing and encouraging rehabilitation through the expansion of “good time” and “merit time” laws.

Advocates will march for the reforms on Tuesday.

Criminal justice reform advocates are pushing for reforms that would redefine sentencing laws in New York, including eliminating mandatory minimums and allowing rehabilitating prisoners to ask for reduced sentences. But a rise in violent crime could hinder their momentum.
