According to investigators, the explosion was caused by 80 pounds (36 kilograms) of Tannerite. According to police, the family believed the quarry would be the safest place to light the explosive, which is commonly sold over the counter as a weapon for gun practice.

According to NBC 10, Boston, nearby people said the explosion shook their homes and claimed property damage.
Sara Taglieri, who lives near the quarry, told the television station, We saw this God-awful blast. It tore pictures off our walls. I m all for hilarity and the like, but that was ridiculous.
