Here are Wednesday s updates regarding COVID-19 in the Upstate

Of the 20,613 COVID-19 test results reported by DHEC on Thursday, 10.3% were positive. Greenville County had 196 new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus. The most populated of the state s 46 counties, Greenville accounts for 10.2% of the state s population according to Census Bureau estimates, and it accounted for 13.7% of the confirmed and probable cases reported Thursday. The state cumulative total is now 419,435 confirmed cases, and there have been 7,010 total confirmed deaths. Additionally, there have been 56,852 probable cases and 827 probable deaths.  Pickens County, which accounts for 2.5% of the state s population, accounted for 3.29% (47) of the cases announced Thursday. Spartanburg, which accounts for 6.2% of the state s population, accounted for 8.5% (122) of the new cases, and Anderson, which accounts for 3.9% of the population, accounted for 3.7% (53) of the cases.

The city introduced a mask requirement in December, it made masks mandatory at most businesses in the city limits but did not include any penalties for violations. Council member Terry Moore said he has spent time at local big box stores he did not identify which ones and saw as much as 40 percent of people not wearing masks as well as workers wearing masks improperly.

On Dec. 14 Easley City Council voted to begin requiring masks after Christmas Day. Masks will be required to be worn indoors in Easley beginning Wednesday, including at busy shopping centers and downtown businesses in the rush before Christmas as officials work to distribute vaccines that could bring an end to the coronavirus pandemic. Easley City Council members voted unanimously Monday night to require masks for people who are indoors or otherwise unable to be socially distanced in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. The ordinance takes effect at 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 15.
