Most box turtles immediately take off from a relocation site in the direction of their home territory, encountering increased threats from predators.

"You run the risk of introducing disease or parasites that those animals may be carrying, and you don't want to introduce that into the populations here."

The discovery has promoted an investigation by the DEC and the Suffolk Parks Department.

Every year when the weather starts to warm up you always see more turtles on the road, and right now you may notice even more as its egg-laying season.
