The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has distanced its militia arm, the Eastern Security Network, ESN, from the attack on Okigwe Correctional Centre.

Armed persons had attacked the Owerri Correctional Centre and freed a total of 1,844 prisoners in April 2021.
