Thousands of holidaymakers have been evacuated from the Greek island of Rhodes as wildfires swept across the region over the weekend.

The first rescue flights have taken Brits back from fire-ravaged Rhodes as tens of thousands flee the devastation.

Downing Street is urging holidaymakers to stay in touch with their tour operators and the local authorities.

There are up to 10,000 British tourists on Rhodes as wildfires sweep across parts of the Greek island, a Foreign Office minister has said.

Cathy Holloway, who lives on the island, says she does not know whether she still has a home.

Raging forest fires on the Greek island of Corfu forced authorities to evacuate more than 2,400 people Monday from 17 settlements while rescue operations on Rhodes continued into a third day.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis says the country is "at war with the fire" with temperatures not expected to drop until later this week.

Holidaymakers describe fleeing flames, sleeping on floors and getting help from local people.
