As Lake Mead shrinks after almost two decades of severe drought, accumulated items on the lakebed are being exposed.

Algoma Public Health lifted its water advisory for everyone who draws water from the St. Mary’s River, following an oil spill from Algoma Steel on June 9.

For the first time since last weeks incident, Algoma says technical advisors estimate that between 1,000 to 1,250 litres of oil was discharged into the river from the water treatment plant.

Last week, it was reported that “a quantity of oil” entered the St. Marys River from Algoma Steel. No one has said how much oil spilled into the St. Marys River.

The township issued an emergency declaration and notice prohibiting irrigation and car washing and using water for essential uses only.
