On Tuesday, Amazon launched a program that forces users of many Echo smart speakers and Ring security cameras to automatically share a small portion of their home wireless bandwidth with neighbours. The only way to stop it is to turn it off yourself.

The purpose of Sidewalks bandwidth-sharing services is to create a "mesh network" to broaden the coverage area of home Wi-Fi networks, Amazon said.

Americans who own an Amazon Echo woke up on Tuesday to discover that the device had started sharing their Wi-Fi with their neighbours.
