An international consensus has emerged that securing democracy in Iraq is strategically essential. Victory in Iraq will be the establishment of a free and democratic Iraq that can guarantee thefreedom, meet the needs, and defend the rights of all its citizens.Victory, like democracy itself, will be a steady but definableprocess that will not be won overnight.

The federal government has grown exponentially, not just in spending (up from approximately $20,000 per household in 2000 to $31,000 today), but in its reach.

We must never take for granted the march of free­dom. AsHeritage President Ed Feulner showed in his 1998 book of thattitle, the line is never straight, and the walk is never easy. Infact, it can be very costly and fraught with setbacks anddisappointments.

Here are two pieces of news. Can you tell which is good and which is bad? 1. Economic growth in the coming months is expected to range between 3 percent and 4 percent. 2. Economic growth in the coming months is expected to be 0.7 percent. The answers might surprise you. The first sentence is actually bad news, because we're talking about the white-hot American economy. GDP grew 5.3 percent in the first quarter, so a drop back to 3 percent would represent a slowdown.

Sometimes you can judge the quality of a president's nominees by taking a look at who opposes them -- and why.
