Olympic boxing world qualifiers cancelled

February 16, 2021 | 5:31 pm Font Size AAA The International Olympic Committee Boxing Task Force (BTF) announced Monday via a virtual meeting that the World Qualifiers for the Tokyo Olympics has been cancelled. The BTF has taken over the function of organizing the boxing competitions in the Olympics after the International Boxing Association (AIBA) was suspended by the Olympic body in 2019. The suspension remains in effect. The tournament was originally scheduled for May 2020 in Paris but was postponed for this year because of the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Two other uncompleted qualifiers, those of the Americas and Europe will push through, but had to be moved back to May and June, respectively.

Boxing body to push Thailand training camp

Published January 2, 2021, 1:26 PM The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) has been working double time to send Olympic hopefuls and qualifiers to a training camp in Thailand in the midst of the pandemic. ABAP secretary general Ed Picson said if things fall into place, select Filipino boxers including Olympic-bound Irish Magno would train for two months at a facility in Muaklek, a two-hour drive from Bangkok starting in February. “Our counterparts there are working feverishly to make this happen,” Picson told Manila Bulletin, adding that they got an offer from the Thailand Boxing Federation last November. He said the original plan was to send the PH squad last December, but they were faced with challenges in working on Thailand’s stringent requirements on travel protocols due to the pandemic.
