First unveiled on May 10, 1941, Whisper the Bull, the iconic statue that sits at the fork in the road where Route 25 splits off from Route 25a. Legend has it that Richard Smith had been given the land now encompassing Smithtown after he helped rescue the kidnapped daughter of a Montauk Chief. The limit of this land gift was said to be determined by the distance he could ride Smith bull over the course of one day. Historians say that this makes for a nice local myth but is not the actual truth of the matter. KINGS PARK, NY Flynn Memorial Ballpark was the site of a grand rededication and ribbon-cutting ceremony last Friday, as Town of Smithtown leadership, local community and veterans organizations, and family of Daniel J. Flynn met to honor the Kings Park native and fallen Vietnam War veteran, according to the town.
The ballfield was recently renovated to boast four resurfaced synthetic turf fields, warning tracks, pitchers warm-up mounds, a concession stand, pro shop and more.
The field was constructed in 1979 and named in honor of Daniel J. Flynn, a member of the 725th Military Police Battalion, C Company. He paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War on May 25, 1968, when he volunteered to take a friend s place on an escort assignment, according to the Town of Smithtown. With 39 tons of waste collected from 860 homes in the township, theTown of Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways set a new record. This was a record number of residents for a single collection event since the hazardous waste event program began in 2009, according to a press release about the event. Town Supervisor Ed Wehrheim thanked everyone who devoted their Saturday to serve the community and protect the environment. “Setting a record such as this one is proof positive that the residents of Smithtown are increasingly more committed to preserving our home and our ecosystem for future generations to come,” said. Vessel took on water after being pushed into rocks by heavy wind and seas on Smithtown Bay.
Photo: Town of Smithtown. Six boaters found themselves in trouble on Tuesday night when their vessel was pushed onto the rocks by heavy sea and wind in Smithtown Bay. Smithtown Bay Constables responded to a distress call off the coast of Crane’s Neck and found the 18-foot boat was taking on water. Smithtown Bay Constables Daniel Shannon, David Rosenberg and Sergeant Scott Roberts were able to navigate the rocky waters and extract the passengers from the disabled vessel onto their patrol boat. The Suffolk County Police Department Marine Bureau and Aviation Units also responded to the call.
