Walz announces education plan aimed at eliminating disparities The plan covers seven categories, including closing the racial education gap and improving opportunities in rural Minnesota Author: The Governor s Office on Monday announced a sweeping education policy agenda aimed at addressing some of the state s most pressing issues, such as student mental health, diversity within school staff and racial and geographic inequities.  The plan, dubbed Due North, was formed over the past few months with guidance from the Governor s Education Roundtable    a group of 22 professionals in teaching, education policy and school finance, including former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page and representatives from the statewide teacher s union Education Minnesota and the Minnesota Youth Council. It will be implemented in conjunction with the Minnesota Department of Education s strategic plan.

Tim Walz will hold a press conference Monday afternoon in what a press release from his administration says will be to announce a sweeping education plan.   The press conference will be held at 2 p.m. to announce an education plan to address the immediate impact of the pandemic while building a world-class education system that prepares every student for success.   Joining Walz will be Department of Education Deputy Commissioner Heather Mueller, Education Minnesota President Denise Specht, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan and former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice and Vikings legend Alan Page.

He is also going to lay out a plan that his office is calling a world-class education system that prepares every student for success.   No details yet on what that entails. Minnesota school leaders discuss plans to return to in-person learning

KSTP Created: December 17, 2020 07:41 AM Some Minnesota school districts are meeting Thursday to discuss the next steps in getting students back in class. Wednesday, Gov. Tim Walz said all elementary schools will be allowed to reopen for in-person learning starting Jan. 18, if certain guidelines are followed. It s a big move for younger students, parents and teachers. Some of those strategies include providing and requiring staff to wear a face shield and mask and offering voluntary COVID-19 testing to educators. State educational leaders say there will also be some guidelines for students. In-person learning always had the plan where students did not need to be physically distanced and so that is one of the pieces that we are going to implement, Minnesota Department of Education Deputy Commissioner Heather Mueller said. But we did say they are going to need to wear masks as one of the executive orders and so they will continue to wear masks.
