In many ways the past year has been one of significant change in the daily lives of people. The way individuals socialize, work and go about everyday activities has changed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The changes in reaction to the new normal may continue even after pandemic itself has passed.
In many ways, this can be seen through the many school districts across the region, who in the face of uncertain times, turned to technology as the key to returning to the classroom following Spring Break 2020. Officials with the Sherman and Denison Independent School districts had to take on the monumental task of moving an entire district into virtual learning during a time of extreme uncertainty.
California school data doesn’t paint a full picture of English learners. It’s more like a sketch.
That’s according to a new report by Californians Together, a nonprofit organization that researches and advocates for students who speak a language other than English at home. These students make up about 2.4 million students in the state 2 out of 5 students.
The report, which is supported by several other partner organizations, says the state’s school accountability tool, the California School Dashboard, makes it too easy for districts to receive high scores for English learners’ progress, because it sets too low a percentage for how many students should be progressing in proficiency each year, and because it lumps students still learning English together with those who have achieved fluency.
I attended the community forum at Coosa High School regarding the closing of Cave Spring Elementary (along with about 150 other people). The superintendent and the Floyd Board of Education said they would listen. At least three solid proposals were brought forth by the community as alternatives to closing CSES. Will those actually be explored?
The forum started with two of the superintendentâs assistants regaling us with hard-to-read Powerpoint slides regarding unused classrooms in the county, and the $4.6 million in repairs and renovations needed for CSES. (âWeâre not going to spend money on a building weâre going to close.â) Which, again, sounds like the decision to close CSES has already been made.
