inside america s election headquarters. we are now lending that the gunman called 9-1-1 just before the attack pledging allegiance to isis coming from a united states official. we also know the f.b.i. was aware of omar mateen by 2013. authorities say he was not the subject of any active investigation. the city of orlando now coming together to mourn the dead and help their families in anyway they can. we not be defined by a hateful shooter. we will be defined how we support and love each other. we have a fox team coverage at the scene. we start with katherine herridg: what do we learn of his previous contacts with the f.b.i.? we are learning a lot about the two contacts with the f.b.i. the first was in 2013, the chairman of the house homeland security committee told fox news that in that particular episode, there everyone inflammatory statements made by the suspect, omar mateen, and they were so alarming to the co-workers they contacted the f.b.i. there were two meeti

[ applause ] the community in grief in orlando right now. we want to welcome our viewers in the united states and around the world. i m wolf blitzer in washington. reporter: and i m pamela brown coming to you live from orlando. thank you so much for joining us on the breaking news story. the worst mass shooting in american history. it s awful, pamela. we ll get back to you in a moment. a nightclub in orlando still an active crime scene just hours after a horrific and terrifying predawn massacre. as we have been reporting, 50 people, at least 50 people are dead. more than 50 people wounded. all shot by a
of those inside the can club. right now fewer than half of the names that have been killed have been released by authorities. still a lot of families desperate for information. we got clarity from officials about those three hours between 2:00 am when the shots first start ringing out to 5:00 am when officials went into the club and took the shooter out. before that 5:00 am entrance into the club they previously had attempted to go inside. they exchanged shots with the shooter. and he retreated into a bathroom. they paused, because he mentioned some kind of explosive device. you ll remember all day yesterday, atf officials were on the scene, scanning for potential explosives. he had something that resembled a device on him, is what officials told us. that kind of gave them pause. closer to 5:00 am, we were out here on the scene and heard a huge explosion. it turned out to be a distractionry device set off by officials in order to distract the shooter. and that s when they wen
of now that this attack was directed about i a specific overseas terrorist group, the terrorist was known by the fbi and had been interviewed three times about possible terror connections. we are now learning that authorities continue to investigate whether others may have been involved in planning or helping to carry out this deadly carnage. we have a team of correspondents and analysts covering every angle of the story, a closer look inside the law enforcement response and questioning whether anything could have been done ahead of time to prevent the massacre. let s start with cnn justice correspondent pamela brown who joins me now live from outside pulse, the nightclub in orlando in question. pamela, the terrorists spoke with police multiple times during this three-hour-long standoff. what did he say to them? reporter: that s right. he was negotiating with the police officers. he called 911. in fact, there were three calls with the 911 operator and in those calls he made
the name of pulse. by 5:00 a.m., it was over, but the police had to come in. it quickly became a hostage situation. it took 11 police officers in all discharging their weapons to bring the suspect down. there are subsequent reports that he called 911 prior to mounting this effort, launching this attack, and in it gave praise to the islamic state and so on, but a dark, dark, terrible day in orlando, florida. especially at this place that was supposed to be built around fun and a safe haven. joe fryer has been able to move closer. he s outside the regional medical center there in orlando. joe? reporter: yeah, brian, we were right by the pulse nightclub, which is actually just a few blocks from the hospital. we have now moved to the hospital where a number of people are being treated. this trauma center is located two or three blocks from the nightclub. those that were injured were able to move here. we know this health care system has treated more than 40 patients so far. 26
