The Edwards County School District has announced some preschool roundup days. The preschool roundup day is or those who are from birth to age 5 who are not already enrolled in school. The event dates are April 12th for Albion at the First Christian Church and April 13th for West Salem at he Moravian Church.. All of the classes for the district will be at Albion Grade School. The screening process takes around 45 minutes and will evaluate the child's progress in hearing, vision, speech, language, and coordination skills. The screenings are a way for parents to learn how the child is developing. Feedback will be delivered on the same day as the screening. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning until 8 p.m. on Wednesday for most of the listening area. Heat index values of up to 115 degrees are anticipated in the afternoon today, tomorrow, and Wednesday, and extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, especially for those working or participating in outdoor activities. Overnight lows will be in the mid- to upper-70s, providing little relief. 31-year-old Fairfield resident Steven M. Thomas was sentenced to prison in Wayne County Circuit Court last week by Judge Michael Molt. He admitted to violating probation in March on an original offense of aggravated assault, a Class 4 felony. Thomas was sentenced to two years in prison and credited with 57 days served. As of this morning, the Illinois Department of Public Health is reporting a total of 3,318,982 cases of the coronavirus in the state along with 33,853 total deaths. Reports from the area indicated Wayne County had one new case in the past few days, while Clay County had five new cases and Richland County reported three new cases. As of this past Wednesday, just over 22 million vaccines had been administered in Illinois, with just over 4.5 million of those booster doses. The award is available to a graduate of a Wayne County high school who has declared a major in education and has accumulated at least 80 semester hours toward that degree at an accredited college or university. Applicants must also have at least a 2.8 college GPA on a 4.0 scale and have full intentions to teach upon graduation. The USDA has announced commodity and specialty crop producers impacted by natural disaster events in 2020 and 2021 will soon begin receiving about $6 billion in emergency relief payments through the Emergency Relief Program. Eligible crops include all crops for which crop insurance or NAP coverage was available, except grazing crops. Qualifying natural disasters include excessive heat, floods, and related conditions.
