The Gerald Desmond Bridge was named after a former Long Beach city attorney and city councilman who helped get funding to build the 5,134-foot-long bridge that connected Long Beach and Terminal Island. Desmond died of kidney cancer at the age of 48, four years before the bridge named after him was opened.

Long Beach and Yokkaichi, Japan, rededicated their sister city relationship over the weekend.

Next week, Long Beach and Yokkaichi, Japan, will celebrate their 60th anniversary together.

A reporter noted that “Nothing from Adam to the atom has set off more of an enthusiastic chain reaction in Long Beach than the city’s coming Diamond Jubilee."

Among the more than 1,000 passengers stepping ashore in Long Beach was Mayor Wade, whose written comments were handed out to the 800 crew members. He assured them that the Queen would be well cared for under the city’s stewardship. “It is expected that the vessel will have a continued life of at least 300 years,” he said.
