As day five of
Eurovision 2021 rehearsals draws to a close, just two acts are left to take the stage for their second rehearsals. Last up for today are the penultimate semi-final one contestants from
Azerbaijan and
Second rehearsals at Eurovision 2021: Azerbaijan and Ukraine
Azerbaijan’s Efendi “Mata Hari” Eurovision 2021 second rehearsal
Oliver: Despite earlier speculation, the stage show from Team Azerbaijan remains mostly the same. The few minor changes seem to be that the serpent in the golden ball features less frequently, and Efendi’s look is cleaner. Her ponytail is now tightly snatched back and the neckline is slightly dropped, sculpting a much more flattering silhouette. Still, the backdrop is rather garish and Efendi’s vocals and choreography need some sharpening up. Qualification is borderline for the former Eurovision powerhouse.

Oliver: Efendi’s outfit is fantastic. It’s another leotard dance costume, but this one’s bejewelled with black crystals. Her dancers are dressed similarly. It looks
expensive. The rest of the stage show however is difficult to wrap your head around, with lots of artsy cultural references from all corners of the globe. The backdrop features a large pulsing golden ball with a viper inside. As the song reaches its climax, the ball rises and sets ablaze like a star reaching supernova. Then, for reasons unknown, it transforms into an eye. And there’s no actual pyro, despite the “I start a fire” line an odd choice! Also, Efendi is heavily relying on backing vocals to carry her through the chorus. It’s not at the same level of elevation that we’ve seen from Azerbaijan in the past. Qualification is probable, but not guaranteed.
This time two weeks, it will be the day after the night before. Of course, the night in question is that of semi-final one. Then we’ll be processing the aftermath, but, for now, all we can do is look into our crystal balls or examine the tea leaves.
