In a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus, several regions in Spain have announced tougher restrictions over the Christmas and New Year holiday period, when more travel and socializing are expected. Under the Spanish Health Ministryâs plan, which was approved on December 2 by a committee of regional health chiefs, gatherings were limited to 10 people and a curfew was set for Christmas Eve and New Yearâs Eve. The plan also allowed citizens to travel to a different region, but only to see family or
allegados, a term meaning people with whom there is a close bond, and which has sparked widespread confusion.

Case numbers continue to rise as the immunization campaign begins
The much-anticipated coronavirus immunization campaign began in Spain on Sunday 27th December, when the first doses of the Pfizer vaccine were administered to residents and staff at homes for the elderly in various locations across the country.
The first beneficiary of the campaign was a 96-year-old woman named Araceli Hidalgo, who lives in the Los Olmos residence in Guadalajara, 60 kilometres north-east of Madrid. She received her first dose at 9.00 and the second will follow in three weeks’ time as the government implements its plan to prioritize those in such homes over and above other groups.
