Serving and former female inmates at the East London Correctional Centre in Westbank have made damning allegations against some of the prison’s warders, accusing them of assault, physical abuse and other criminal acts. A former warder at the facility has given credence to some of the allegations — including that they beaten with batons and fists — saying the beating of inmates was a commonplace occurrence.

The equipment to be acquired include new generation anti-tank mines, Air Defence Tactical Control Radar, Heavy Weight Torpedoes, Medium Range Maritime Reconnaissance and Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft, Flight Refueller Aircraft and Software Defined Radios.

Learning and teaching have been disrupted at the University of Fort Hare’s at East London and Dikeni campuses since Wednesday. On Thursday, students demonstrated on both campuses and vowed not to back off until their issues were resolved.
