Nations from around the world have written to the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) to express their dismay at the governing body’s failure to publish the list of candidates for forthcoming elections.
There have been complaints of poor governance, a lack of transparency, and giving an unfair advantage to certain candidates on the current IWF Executive Board who have the information that is denied to others.
For the last elections in 2017 the list was published five days after the nominations deadline.
This year, eight days has passed already and there is no sign of the IWF naming the candidates for President, first vice-president, vice-president and a place on the Executive Board.

For the fourth time in less than four months the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has strongly criticised the way weightlifting is governed.
Thomas Bach, the IOC president, spoke out after learning that the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) had changed its anti-doping rules without consulting the IOC.
News of the controversial decision, which was made without any public announcement or internal communication to the IWF’s 192 member federations, was revealed by
The most significant change was a new threshold - four doping violations rather than three - for punishing nations with multiple offences within a year.
The IWF Board also voted to remove any reference to bringing weightlifting into disrepute , an offence which was punishable with a two-year suspension under the old rules.
IWF delays Congress after agreeing to need for completely new constitution Friday, 22 January 2021
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has moved it s two-day Constitutional Congress back by a month, but will go ahead with elections as planned in the last week of March.
The decision has been made because so much work is needed on improving the IWF s governance - one of the areas in which it has been criticised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The sport’s Olympic status is under constant review by the IOC after a series of corruption scandals and concerns over doping.
Last October, after the IWF Board ousted its reformist Interim President Ursula Papandrea of the United States, the IOC said it stressed the critical importance of continuing reforms within the IWF in order to ensure the independence of its anti-doping operations and the modernisation of its governance and management structures .
Just days ago, the nation was seconds away from seeing the executions of members of the United States Congress at the hands of insurrectionist thugs gleefully chanting that they would hang Mike Pence. And with the capital s heightened security measures for entire days surrounding Joe Biden s inauguration, the worst could be yet to come. President Trump spent two months lying to millions of his supporters that the election was stolen, and politicians like Josh Hawley angling for a 2024 run bet that they could go along with it.
